Teresa Marie Bondurant 1980 graduate from Yellow Springs. Teresa moved to Yellow Springs in 1969 attended Mills Lawn elementary school and Arthur Morgan Middle school. Like many Youth in Yellow Springs, organized sports began with Perry League T-Ball which was open to all youth. The buck stopped there for girls as the boys moved on to a very competitive soccer program. Girls were sidelined to watch. Fortunately, most of the Coaches were fathers coaching their own sons and a few were courageous enough to include their daughters and other girls. Leroy Bondurant was amongst the first to put his daughter on his team; girls and boys continued to enjoy playing together currently. Teresa played on the 1st traveling soccer team, formed by her father and coached by Shirley Kristensen. Teresa and a handful of girls were also the 1st to play little league baseball in Yellow Springs. Middle school had the same challenges, no organized sports for girls; Teresa was prohibited to play basketball with the boys but ended up running on the boys track team and fared well. Meanwhile the parents of other female sports enthusiast in Yellow Springs launched an initiative so that girls could have equal opportunities in sports and there sprung what is now known as Title IX. Entering YSHS in the fall of 1976 was exciting. Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Track, Tennis and Softball were available for girls.. There could be no better first coach to have then, Duke Conrad. Teresa was very determined, she started and led the team in scoring over the next 4 years, peaking in fall of 1978 when Coach Conrad led the YSHS girls to a win in the Worthington Tournament which included the top soccer teams in the state all classes included.
Leroy Bondurant The Yellow Springs High School soccer program was started in the fall of 1975 coached by Roy Bondurant. Since that beginning, the program has gone on to be one of the most successful in the area. Coach Bondurant went on to coach 5 years and amass a stellar record of 69-15-1. This was against all larger schools because at that time there was only division 1 in soccer. He made Yellow Springs into a powerhouse. He was an innovator. He was one of the first soccer coaches to film games which was unusual for that time. He was very protective of his players and would on many occasions find himself in a heated disagreement with the referees when they missed a foul. Needless to say he was not a favorite of the referees. He had a great relationship with his assistant coaches Coach Ted Campbell and Coach Paul Graham who were with him for much of his coaching days in Yellow Springs. Many of the past and present coaches at Yellow Springs are former players of coach Bondurant and continue the winning spirit he started 38 years ago. Prior to starting the high school program he established the Yellow Springs SAY Travel soccer program for boys and girls in 1972. Yellow Springs went 16-0 the first season with many of those players going on to the high school team 3 years later. His youth teams went on to consecutive runners-up finishes in the state cup. He accumulated numerous awards and accomplishments most notably the 1978-1979 team being ranked 2nd in the state and Dayton area coach of the year 1977. He produced 16 All-area, 2 All-State, 2 All-Midwest and 1 All-American player(s) during his time as coach. 16 of his players went on to play college soccer.

As a senior at YSHS Sarah was the recipient of the “Athlete of the Year” award. At Wright State Sarah won the “Raider Award” twice in basketball and once in volleyball. She also served on the Wright State University Athletic Council for 2 years. It was important to Sarah that female athletes were given equal treatment to their male counterparts and as a young student she wrote letters to local and national politicians prior to the implementation of Title IX. One of her coaches during her sixth grade commented that he wished she could play on his boys’ team because of her ability. After college Sarah played on an International Tam called the “Foxes” and as she quoted, a ridiculous name given to the team by their male coach. This inspired Sarah even more to take an active role in making sure that female athletes were treated with fairness and respect. After graduating from Wright State University, Sarah began a teaching career with the Huber Heights City Schools. Shortly thereafter Sarah took a half time position with the Yellow Springs Schools as a Health and Physical Education teacher which eventually led to a fulltime position along with being a coach. Sarah is married to Doug Lowe and they have two adult children, Carly and Trevor.
